Glenorchy Air is actively working towards becoming the first Queenstown-based operator to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in our turbine aircraft, which comprise 75% of our fleet capacity. We have implemented our fleet upgrade program and have replaced four of our smaller aircraft with larger, quieter and more efficient types. The new aircraft were chosen as they are the most efficient aircraft in their class and are already certified to run on SAF. The two types in our fleet that will be able to run on SAF once its available in New Zealand are our two Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX and our new Daher Kodiak 100 Series II.
What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a biofuel, a liquid fuel produced from renewable sources such as plants or algae, that is used to power aircraft. It is similar to conventional jet fuel, but has a smaller carbon footprint and in some cases, a net-negative greenhouse gas footprint.
Sustainable feedstocks are used to produce SAF. Feedstocks are varied and can range from:
- Cooking oils
- Plant oils
- Algae
- Food waste
- Agricultural waste
- Forestry waste
- Wet wastes (manures, wastewater treatment sludge)
